AMD is strengthening its AI inference strategy by acquiring Taalas, a Toronto-based start-up that designs chips optimised for a specific AI model rather than general-purpose processors.
On 6 August, AMD announced the acquisition of Taalas, a Toronto-based start-up founded in 2023 by former architects from Tenstorrent and AMD, specialising in AI inference chips. Rather than designing general-purpose processors, Taalas tailors its circuits to a specific AI model, thereby reducing the computational and memory bottlenecks inherent in general-purpose architectures.
This technology is set to complement AMD’s comprehensive AI platform, which already includes Helios rack systems, Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs and the ROCm software suite. The deal, the value of which has not been disclosed, is expected to be finalised in the fourth quarter, subject to regulatory approvals.
