More than $100 million for 54,000 m² of manufacturing in Greenwood, with robotic welding and 300 jobs at nearly $100,000 annually.
Amazon announced on September 24 an investment of more than $100 million in an advanced manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana. The 585,000-square-foot building — about 54,000 square feet — is scheduled to open in 2028 and will supply parts for robotic systems deployed in the company's North American logistics network.
The plant will bring together mechanical manufacturing, robotic welding, automated application of powder coatings and assembly, all driven by production systems based on the group's cloud services. Three hundred positions are announced, including machine tool operators, welders, technicians, production engineers and quality specialists, for an average salary of nearly $100,000 per year. The site is located across the street from an existing distribution center, near the Interstate 65 interchange.
It is Amazon's fourth robot factory in the United States, after the one in Massachusetts and a similar announcement made in Texas the previous month. The group claims to have more than one million robots manufactured and deployed in more than 300 sites, accounting for three-quarters of the orders delivered worldwide. Internalizing the manufacture of machines, rather than buying them, is a way of securing the supply of a fleet that has become central to operations.
