From the class of 2029 onwards, every undergraduate student at Ohio State will be required to master the use of AI within their own field of study, as part of an initiative known as ‘AI Fluency’.
Ohio State University has launched an initiative called ‘AI Fluency’, which aims to ensure that every undergraduate student, from the Class of 2029 onwards, is not only proficient in their discipline but also capable of mastering the use of AI as applied to that discipline. The first steps were taken in autumn 2025, with an introduction to the basics of generative AI in the compulsory first-year orientation seminar.
In early 2026, the university reached a significant milestone: all its faculties drew up academic roadmaps setting out how AI skills would be developed within each degree programme. More than 1,300 people have already completed at least one professional development course linked to this initiative, which also provides for the recruitment of 100 new academic staff over five years to support it.
