The Amazon subsidiary is starting with test vehicles driven by human supervisors, with no announced timeline for opening to passengers.
Zoox, Amazon's robotaxis subsidiary, announced on 1 September 2026 the expansion of its operations in Houston and San Diego. The mapping and autonomous driving tests start within a month, ahead of a possible commercial service. The company is now active in 12 U.S. markets, alongside Seattle, Austin, Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Washington.
The deployment follows the company's usual method: modified serial vehicles, with a human supervisor on board, are first used to manually map areas before shuttles without a driver's station are introduced. No timetable has been communicated for passenger transport in these two cities.
At this point, Zoox only charges trips to Las Vegas; in San Francisco, access remains free and reserved for selected users. The announcement took place on the same day as Waymo's announcement on its own market openings.
