Powerful Medical's algorithm targets complete coronary occlusions that are not obvious from the tracing, in order to refer patients to a cath room faster.
The FDA has granted the Queen of Hearts algorithm, developed by Powerful Medical, a de novo clearance. The ranking matters: fewer than a dozen AI-based medical devices obtain it each year, and it requires more substantial clinical evidence than the usual 510(k) procedure, which relies on equivalence with an already marketed product.
The tool tackles the most serious form of infarction, when a coronary artery is completely blocked. These patients must go to a cardiac catheterization room as soon as possible, but the elevation of the ST segment that signals the event is not always immediately readable on the electrocardiogram. The algorithm therefore intervenes when triaging patients who present with chest pain.
