The company confirms that it is conducting physical experiments with its models, on basic biology rather than on drug discovery.
Anthropic confirmed to TechCrunch on September 18, 2026 the existence of a wet biology laboratory that it operates in San Francisco Bay, without specifying its location. The facility operates as a conventional biotechnology site, combining internal research and external partnerships, but is oriented towards fundamental biology rather than drug development.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who leads the life sciences at Anthropic, justifies this choice by the very nature of the discipline: according to him, making biology still assumes, and for a moment, that the final test takes place in a real laboratory. The company also launched an audit program this week to open access to its models to accredited researchers in the field.
This laboratory extended the acquisition in April 2026 of the young Coefficient Bio shoot for $400 million, as well as recent work on accelerating protein design and biomolecular modelling. The announcement did not fail to react: investor Chamath Palihapitiya publicly raised the tension between Anthropic's warnings about AI's biological risks and its expansion in the same area.
