The company is publishing metrics on the automation of its own R&D and is calling on its competitors to do the same, at a time when its chief executive is calling for a slowdown in the sector.
Anthropic has released unusual measures this week: those of the place taken by his own model in the design of the next. Claude "pilot" now 26% of the research and development work on models, i.e. he carries out most of an end-to-end task based on a high-level instruction, under human supervision. In February, this proportion was zero; the threshold of the quarter was crossed in August.
A larger measure completes the picture: about 90% of the company's R&D is carried out "in collaboration" with the model, a category that refers to large blocks of work carried out under close human conduct. In August, some 30,000 officers were assigned to research and engineering.
The company adds a warning to these figures: models that accelerate their own development could make it more difficult for humans to understand and control these systems. It calls on other laboratories to regularly publish comparable indicators, in the name of narrowing the gap between what advanced laboratories know and what the public knows. The announcement comes at a time when several figures in the sector, including its own Managing Director Dario Amodei, are calling for a slowdown in the pace of development.
