Ten wind projects connected to the ERCOT grid are to provide the equivalent of 1.8 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided per year, on the way to a target set for 2035.
Oracle announced on September 18 a series of investments in ten Texas wind projects, totaling more than 1.7 gigawatts of generation capacity. The electricity is fed into the ERCOT grid, the same one that powers the company's AI data center in Abilene, Texas. The energy partners are Clearway Energy, ENGIE, RWE and Scout Clean Energy.
The company estimates the expected impact at approximately 1.8 million metric tons of CO₂ avoided each year, a volume it compares to the annual consumption of more than 525,000 U.S. homes. "Oracle has set a goal to cover 100% of the electricity consumption of its AI data centers with carbon-free electricity by 2035," said Mahesh Thiagarajan, executive vice president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
The wording deserves attention: it is an accounting match between consumption and contracted renewable production, not a carbon-free power supply hour by hour. The distinction becomes central as data centers weigh on already stretched regional networks.
