Pony.ai unveils an autonomous electric truck whose equipment costs 70% less

Presented at IAA Transportation, the fourth-generation Robotruck has nine lidars and thirteen cameras, and is aiming for series production by the end of 2026.

Pony.ai presented at IAA Transportation 2026 its fourth-generation Robotruck, a Level 4 battery-electric heavy-duty truck developed with GAC Commercial Vehicle, which provides the architecture — that of the T9 truck. The perception is based on nine lidars, three millimeter radars and thirteen cameras covering 360 degrees, with complete redundancy on steering, braking, power, calculation, sensors and communications.

The company announces a 70% lower material cost than the previous generation, a reduction of about 30% in the operating cost per tonne-kilometer and a 10% gain in fuel efficiency compared to a conventional truck, helped by a drag coefficient of 0.4. The driving software, called Virtual Driver, is the same as that of the brand's seventh-generation robotaxis.

Series production is due to start before the end of 2026, initially on long-distance freight, dedicated logistics corridors and port operations – constrained environments where autonomous driving is more easily delivering on its promises. An expansion to Europe and the Middle East is announced over two years.
