Google pulls its satellite imagery generator tool from Google Earth after one day

Faced with fears of misinformation, Google suspended a feature less than 24 hours after its launch that allows it to generate photorealistic fake satellite images on Google Earth.

Google had launched a feature in Google Earth on July 30 that allows you to zoom in on any point on the globe, then AI generate a photorealistic image superimposed on the platform's real satellite, aerial and 3D data, thanks to its Nano Banana 2 technology. The next day, the company backtracked after the release of screenshots showing generated images that violated its rules.

Google explained that it was temporarily removing the feature "while we put in place stronger safeguards", recalling that users "particularly trust Google Earth to obtain a reliable view of the world". Among the cases cited by the press is the generation of a false image representing a nuclear power plant in Iran.
