Nvidia, Google and Emerald AI are building an alliance to make data centers flexible

The AI Energy Management Alliance wants to make computing centres a manageable load, and exchange this flexibility for faster network connections.

Nvidia, Google and Emerald AI announced on September 16, 2026 the creation of the AI Energy Management Alliance, a coalition intended to standardize data centers capable of modulating their consumption according to the state of the power grid. The argument put forward: about 100 GW could be released on the existing American grid if the centers agreed to reduce or shift their load during peak hours.

The means envisaged are known — battery storage, on-site production, software capable of slowing down, suspending or moving the least urgent calculations. The novelty is the quid pro quo: an accelerated connection. In the United States, a new center can now wait a decade or more before being plugged in, due to a lack of available capacity.

The alliance therefore intends to work as much on technical standards and performance indicators as on the political field, by addressing governors, state regulators and Washington to obtain priority treatment of installations that commit to these flexibility criteria.
