Waymo aims for Tokyo in 2027 with Nihon Kotsu and GO, for its first foray into Asia

About 100 Jaguar I-Pace are to provide Japan's first commercial driverless taxi service, subject to state and local approvals.

Waymo announced on 15 September 2026 its intention to launch Japan's first autonomous taxi commercial service in Tokyo in 2027. The company is associated for this purpose with the GO reservation application and with the local operator Nihon Kotsu, with a fleet of about one hundred Jaguar I-Pace.

The division of roles is clear: GO will ensure integration into the Japanese taxi sector, Nihon Kotsu will take over the operation of the fleet, and Waymo will provide autonomous driving technology while retaining responsibility for safety validation. Races can be ordered from the GO app as from Waymo.

No specific date is fixed: the timetable depends on the authorizations of national and municipal authorities. The project extends a work started in 2025, when Waymo started testing its technology in the streets of Tokyo with drivers from Nihon Kotsu driving, time to map the city and adapt its software to a dense urban environment.
