Cohere and Aleph Alpha sign their merger: a transatlantic sovereign player valued at around 20 billion

On 16 September, the Canadian and German companies converted the merger announced in April into a definitive agreement. Double headquarters in Toronto and Berlin, more than a thousand employees.

Cohere and Aleph Alpha signed on 16 September 2026 the final agreement which seals their rapprochement, first revealed in April. The ensemble will operate under the Cohere brand, with a double seat in Toronto and Berlin, while the Heidelberg office in Aleph Alpha will be refocused on research. The value of the new entity is estimated at around $20 billion, for more than a thousand employees.

Aidan Gomez remains general manager. Ilhan Scheer, co-leader of Aleph Alpha, became director of operations, and co-founder Samuel Weinbach took over the research direction of the merged group. The German Schwarz group is also committing 600 million dollars in Cohere's future E series.

The bet is that of the corporate and public sector market rather than the general public: Cohere sells deployable models from the customer, Aleph Alpha specialized in the accompaniment of European administrations and large companies. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close by the end of 2026.
