OpenAI has announced that it has surpassed the one billion mark for active users, whilst significantly reducing the prices for its GPT-5.6 Luna model, driven by efficiency gains achieved through the AI itself.
OpenAI announced at the end of July that its models now have over one billion active users and more than two million business customers. Following this, the company has reduced the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80 per cent; it is now charged at $0.20 per million input tokens, down from $1 previously; GPT-5.6 Terra has seen a 20 per cent reduction.
According to OpenAI, these price cuts were made possible by efficiency gains achieved when Sol, a model from the GPT-5.6 family, re-optimised part of the production code running on GPUs, reducing service costs by around 20 per cent. Experiments with speculative decoding have also improved token generation efficiency by more than 15 per cent.
