Los Angeles was already blocking all generative AI on its school devices, without the knowledge of its own board

The second largest school district in the United States revealed in early September that its filters prohibit student access to generative tools, information that surprised elected officials and parents.

On September 2, 2026, the Los Angeles Unified School District reported that its filtering software was already blocking all generative AI tools for students on devices provided by the district. The revelation took the board and families by surprise, as they discovered a restriction in place without an explicit public decision.

The district has a history in this area: its previous school chatbot, developed at great expense, had been cut short. On the same day, New York announced a one-year moratorium on generative AI for students from kindergarten to third grade.

The two largest districts in the United States have tightened their rules at the same time, at a time when the federal government and several states are pushing for the introduction of AI in the classroom. The start of the 2026-2027 school year opens with this gap between the discourse of equipment and the decisions taken on the ground.
