The largest school district in the United States is instituting a one-year moratorium covering two-thirds of its enrollment; high schools are keeping five limited pilots and two 45-minute modules on critical thinking.
Announced on September 2, 2026 by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and School Chancellor Kamar Samuels, the moratorium applies from the 2026-2027 school year to grades 2-K to 8th grade, i.e. from kindergarten to 3rd grade. About 600,000 students are affected, nearly two-thirds of the district's enrolment.
In high school, access is not eliminated but strongly regulated: five limited pilot programs will reach a maximum of 50,000 students, about 5% of the student body, and two 45-minute modules will be devoted to the critical examination of AI systems. Teachers, on the other hand, retain the right to use these tools to prepare their lessons and deal with their administrative tasks.
The justification put forward can be summed up in a sentence from the mayor: children need teachers and human relations to learn and grow. As the measure is limited to one year, it is less a ban in principle than a pause, the time to measure what these tools really do to learning.
