California opens AskCA, a public assistant built with Claude to direct residents to state services

The Office of Data and Innovation's prototype starts from life events — looking for a job, starting a business, dealing with a disaster — rather than from the administrative organization chart.

Announced on September 9, 2026, AskCA is a single point of entry to Californian state and community services. The prototype, developed by the Office of Data and Innovation with Anthropic's Claude model, is organized around concrete situations: finding a job, starting a business, accessing family help, rebuilding after a disaster.

Its origin is also a disaster: the administration's response to the Los Angeles fires of January 2025, which highlighted the difficulty of residents to identify the right interlocutor among dozens of devices.

The opening is done by registering one pilot in ask.ca.gov. The first deployment in real service is for CalHR, which is due to launch on September 30 on CalCareers.ca.gov a matching function between skills and job offers based on the same prototype.
