Perplexity runs its Computer agent locally on Windows, provided you have 24 GB of VRAM

The Portable Computer agent arrives in the Windows application and runs entirely on the GPU, around a Qwen 3.8 27B. The files do not leave the machine.

On September 14, Perplexity ported its Portable Computer agent to its Windows application. Unlike the cloud version, the entire device — model, agent harness, orchestrator — runs on the user's machine, around a Qwen 3.8 of 27 billion parameters post-trained specifically for agentic use and optimized for Nvidia cards.

The trade-off is hardware: you need a GeForce RTX or an RTX PRO with at least 24 GB of video memory, which restricts the field to the 3090, 4090 and 5090 and their professional equivalents. Support for DGX stations is announced as imminent.

The agent connects to Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, and GitHub, and has a built-in browser as well as an execution sandbox. Tasks performed on the machine do not consume any Perplexity Computer credits, and processed files remain local; only steps explicitly escalated to the cloud leave the station.
