Carbon Brief puts the electricity consumption and emissions associated with the rise of data centres dedicated to artificial intelligence into context, backed up by figures.
Carbon Brief provides a quantitative overview of the energy impact of AI-related data centres, with global electricity consumption associated with this infrastructure expected to reach around 800 TWh by 2026.
The analysis highlights significant regional disparities: in Ireland, the share of electricity consumed by data centres could reach 32 per cent by 2026 according to the IEA, compared with 26 per cent already in Virginia (US) and up to 79 per cent in the Dublin region. Major technology groups collectively plan to invest several trillion dollars in this infrastructure by 2030, raising the question of how this can be reconciled with their carbon-neutrality commitments.
