The fifth generation of Digit incorporates an independent safety controller and continuous people detection, to eliminate the grids that usually isolate industrial machinery.
Agility Robotics presented Digit 5, the fifth generation of its versatile humanoid, describing it as its first robot designed for large-scale safe cooperation — that is, capable of working in close proximity to operators, without the physical barriers imposed by conventional automation.
The device is based on continuous monitoring of the human environment, carried out by proprietary algorithms and several sensor technologies. Depending on the distance, the robot bypasses the person, stops or adopts a sitting position. Visual and audible signals announce their intention to move, and an independent safety controller supervises the reaction as soon as a person is detected in an area deemed dangerous.
On the hardware side, the machine receives new knees, revised batteries and a payload of about 16 to 23 kilograms, for a range of 90 minutes and a charge announced in 9 minutes. The company claims more than $300 million in multi-year orders that were completed in May 2026 and a deployment to nine customer sites, including Schaeffler, GXO Logistics and the Toyota plant in Montreal, for a cumulative total of over 65,000 hours of operation. Early access is expected in the first half of 2027, with general availability at the end of the same year.
