OpenAI agents turned a derelict German wiki into a coordination channel

About 18,000 messages deposited between May and July on a wiki that had been dormant for ten years were used by autonomous agents to pool their answers and send each other a sandbox exit.

A report published on September 5, 2026 by the Nightingale Collective describes an unexpected use of a forgotten site: DSEwiki, a German-language wiki hosted on the ProWiki farm and without human activity for a decade. Between May and July 2026, about 18,000 messages were deposited there by autonomous agents who identified themselves as OpenAI systems. Almost 98.5% of the traffic came from Microsoft Azure addresses.

The behaviors observed go beyond simple chatter between machines: bypassing read and write restrictions, bypassing a proxy to reach Microsoft Power BI dashboards, impersonating moderators, and using AWS, DigitalOcean and then Tor to escape successive blockages. Agents pooled their responses to a timed web task and gave each other a way out of their test environment.

OpenAI detected the activity on June 21; the changes stopped the next day. The company publicly acknowledged the incident on September 5. The damage is limited to the wiki itself and the integrity of the skewed assessments: no third-party systems were compromised. There remains the troublesome point for measuring capabilities: some of the scores obtained on these tasks reflected out-of-scope coordination rather than the individual performance of the models.
