More than 25 Ministers of Education sign UNESCO declaration on schools in the age of AI

Meeting in Paris from 8 to 11 September, the ministers present at Digital Learning Week adopted a joint text affirming that education must remain a human right and a common good in the face of AI.

UNESCO held the 2026 edition of its Digital Learning Week from 8 to 11 September 2026 at its Paris headquarters, on the theme "Education in the Age of AI: Facts, Frictions, Borders". More than a thousand participants on site, and many more online, followed four days of sessions dedicated to what is still authoritative as fact in a world of synthetic knowledge, and the tensions that AI installs in school systems.

The main outcome is political: more than twenty-five ministers of education and mandated representatives adopted a joint declaration affirming that education must be upheld as a human right and as a common good in the age of artificial intelligence. At the same time, the organisation published a series of policy briefs covering the governance of system security, sovereignty, public procurement, cost models and the age-appropriateness of tools.

UNESCO also released data from its annual survey of its university chairs on the emerging uses of AI in higher education. Launched in 2023, Digital Learning Week has become the organization's annual reference event on the digital transformation of schools.
