WeatherNext 3 uses real-time satellite data to update the weather forecast every hour

Google has announced a resolution of up to five kilometres for certain variables and hourly forecasts, intended in particular for the agriculture and energy sectors.

On September 3, Google DeepMind and Google Research presented WeatherNext 3. The model combines recent satellite observations with analysis data to renew its predictions every hour. Some surface variables, such as temperature, are produced on a five-kilometer grid.

The resolution depends on the variables: other surface data is ten kilometres away and atmospheric variables are twenty-five. Google has announced an integration into its products and its Cloud offer. The progress claimed relates in particular to precipitation and the needs of renewable energy, with performance to be assessed depending on the region and the phenomenon studied.
