The University of Leicester opens Microsoft 365 Copilot to all its students and staff

More than 21,000 students and 4,000 staff have access to the tool from September, a first for a UK university on this scale.

The University of Leicester, named one of the first "Frontier Universities" by Microsoft, is rolling out full access to Microsoft 365 Copilot for its entire community — more than 21,000 students and 4,000 staff members — starting in September in what is billed as a first of its scale among British universities. The tool is integrated into the institution's teaching, learning, research and administrative services.

This widespread deployment is part of a broader movement by British and American universities which, after a phase of disparate and sometimes restrictive rules on the use of generative AI, are switching to assumed institutional integration rather than case-by-case regulation left to each teacher.
