Less than a month after the obligations for general-purpose models came into force, Brussels formally questioned more than 30 providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
European Commissioner Henna Virkkunen confirmed on 29 August the first concrete step in the implementation of the European AI Regulation: the AI Office sent formal requests for information to more than 30 suppliers of general-purpose AI models, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. The relevant obligations became enforceable on 2 August, so the EU only waited a little less than a month to operate its new powers.
Two sets of questions were sent. The first concerns systemic risks: securing models against attacks, independent external assessments, post-market surveillance. The second is for suppliers who have neither published a detailed summary of their model training data nor participated in the informal compliance exchanges proposed by the AI Agency. The replies are legally binding and placed on a permanent supervisory file.
