ChatGPT Health connects to Epic, the patient record of more than 325 million people

OpenAI opens a read-only gateway between its health assistant and Epic's electronic medical record, so that caregivers can query their patients' data.

OpenAI has connected ChatGPT Health to the electronic medical record of Epic, a publisher whose systems host the data of more than 325 million patients. Caregivers can now import consultation reports, laboratory results, treatments and correspondence from specialists, then request summaries, identify changes or prepare for an upcoming appointment. The integration is deliberately limited to reading: the model does not rewrite anything in the file.

At the same time, the company is adding a public health data module, which queries sources such as ClinicalTrials.gov, RxNorm, DailyMed, CMS reimbursement policies or PubMed — enough to verify eligibility criteria for a clinical trial or identify a molecule. Establishments that have signed a data outsourcing agreement can rely on ChatGPT Work for uses that comply with American regulations.

OpenAI highlights an evaluation conducted with doctors on 27 clinical situations, 99.1% of which were deemed safe. However, the legal context remains tense for the company, between a wrongful death complaint filed in May and a more recent case of dangerous recommendation. OpenAI continues to repeat that its models are not diagnostic or prescription tools.
