The Motion Picture Association signs with ByteDance on the protection of works in video models

The organization, which represents major Hollywood studios, has reached an agreement with ByteDance to protect intellectual property in its image and video generation models.

The Motion Picture Association, which brings together the main American studios, has reached an agreement with ByteDance to protect intellectual property in the Chinese group's image and video generation models, including the Seedance family.

The deal comes in a year when the entertainment industry has ramped up contractual guardrails rather than wait for judicial clarification. SAG-AFTRA's 2026 agreement with studios only allows synthetic performers when they add "significant value" to the project, and mandates notice before any assignment of an actor's performance for model training.

For its part, the IATSE, which represents technicians, has obtained a three-year agreement with guarantees against the use of AI, with a clause specifying that no employee can be forced to provide instructions to a model if it leads to the elimination of his or her own position.
