Gallup: More than one in two American students use AI every week, often against the advice of their institution

The survey shows that the use of these tools has become routine, while the majority of students describe an institution that discourages or prohibits these tools.

A Gallup study of thousands of U.S. students found that more than half of them use AI in their work at least once a week, with greater adoption in management, technology, and engineering fields.

The contrast with institutional policies is clear: more than half of enrolled students say their school discourages the use of AI (42%) or prohibits it altogether (11%). Conversely, about four in ten say they are encouraged to do so, either freely (7%) or within defined limits (35%).

This discrepancy between daily practice and institutional framework partly explains the heterogeneity of the rules observed from one teacher to another, due to the lack of a common doctrine at the university level.
