Nvidia agrees to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion

According to The Information, the chipmaker has reportedly completed the acquisition of the leading open model platform. Neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face have confirmed.

The file is moving fast. After weeks of rumours about a sale, Nvidia would have reached an agreement to buy Hugging Face up to $12.9 billion, according to information published on August 26 by The Information. Business Insider, for its part, talks about a valuation of over 13 billion, without an agreement signed at this stage — the transaction could thus still fail. When questioned, the two companies refused to comment.

The amount marks a break in scale. Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has become the required gateway to open-access dataset and model sharing, but its annualized revenue is around $150 million. Its last known valuation was in 2023, at $4.5 billion in a $235 million round that already involved Nvidia, Salesforce and Google. The company had also declined in 2025 a 500 million equity stake proposed by Nvidia.

Strategic interest is easy to read. The more open ecosystem remains alive, the more companies have alternatives to closed laboratories — the more Nvidia equipment they need to run these models at home. As OpenAI, Google and Amazon push their own inference chips, getting hold of the main open model repository means securing a distribution channel as well as a software asset.
