Valued at $1.05 billion, the company promises to free up more than 100 GW of the existing U.S. grid by modulating the consumption of data centers according to the state of the grid.
Emerald AI announced on August 25 a $150 million oversubscribed A series, co-led by Energize Capital and DCVC, bringing its valuation to $1.05 billion and total financing beyond $220 million.
The company bet reverses the usual problem. Rather than claiming more capacity from the power grid, its software varies the consumption of a computing centre according to the voltages observed on the grid. By making this load manageable and verifiable, Emerald AI estimates that it will be able to release more than 100 gigawatts of existing US infrastructure without building new lines.
The product has gone beyond the demonstration stage: it is deployed at the scale of an entire data centre in California, where it held during a peak of voltage on the network. With Silicon Valley Power, the company has launched a flexible load connection program that provides data centers with expanded access in exchange for effective flexibility. In Manassas, Virginia, she works with Digital Realty and NVIDIA on a facility of about 100 megawatts originally designed to modulate its power.
