189 commands executed without an operator: Shield AI's AI pilot passes his exam in low Earth orbit

Combined with Sedaro's software stack, the Hivemind system drove imaging, diagnostics, batteries and orientation of a NOVI Space satellite over 24-hour windows.

Sedaro and Shield AI announced on August 24 the completion of the first flight tests of Hivemind, Shield AI's autonomous pilot, on board a NOVI Space satellite in low Earth orbit. This is the first time that this system, originally designed for aeronautics, manages satellite operations in real time.

Hivemind was coupled to Sedaro's autonomous flight engine, known as SAFE. Over 24-hour consecutive test windows, the set executed and validated 189 autonomous commands covering imaging tasks, on-board diagnostics, battery management and satellite orientation, without the intervention of a ground operator. The efficiency of establishing contact via Iridium is 8 percentage points higher than the baseline.

The demonstration is part of a phase II SBIR contract signed with the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Space Systems Command. The commercial argument can be summed up in one sentence: autonomy is deployed here as a software layer, applicable to constellations already in orbit as well as to those to come, without requiring dedicated hardware.
