At the start of the school year, Purdue had to rewrite 331 diploma models to impose its AI requirement

Mandatory courses, dedicated majors, skills integrated into existing curricula: American universities are including AI mastery in their degrees for the fall of 2026.

The American re-entry 2026 marks a shift: AI ceases to be an optional workshop to become a condition of graduation. At the Kelley School of Business at the University of Indiana, two mandatory courses — IA 101 and IA 201 — enter the program, with a weekly sequence "What's New in AI" designed to absorb a rhythm of evolution that annual models no longer follow," says Williams.

Purdue goes further by creating a diploma requirement satisfied by twenty-two elective courses. The administrative cost of the operation is the measure of the project: "we had to modify 331 study plans," reports Haley Oliver-Jischke. Northwestern opens a major in AI, the Wentworth Institute of Technology a Bachelor of Applied Artificial Intelligence, Suffolk University a co-major; Miami University, Ohio State and SUNY network have preferred to inject skills into existing curricula rather than create separate curricula.

Pressure comes from the labour market. In March 2026, 35% of first-level job offers required AI skills, compared with 13% six months earlier; 58% of employers assign their trainees tasks using these tools, and only 70% believe graduates are "quite prepared." For Ray Schroeder of UPCEA, AI mastery "can make the difference between getting a job or not, especially at the beginning of a career."
