Outer Biosciences tests its molecules on human skin kept alive a month

Michael Polansky's start-up spins a closed loop between prediction by IA and validation on skin tissue from plastic surgery, with six active candidates in development.

Located near Cambridge in Massachusetts and founded in 2022, Outer Biosciences uses an unusual method to search for cosmetic assets: instead of validating compounds on cell cultures or animal models, it tests them on human skin tissue maintained alive. The skin comes from samples intended to be removed after plastic surgery, provided by biobanks such as the National Disease Research Interchange and the Cooperative Human Tissue Network, and then kept functional for up to a month thanks to a support system developed internally.

The device forms a self-strengthening loop. A model predicts which chemical compounds should improve a given skin function; successful candidates pass on living tissue; the experimental results shall retrain the following model. The company claims six active applicants in development and the production of a new track approximately every six weeks.

The team brings together Michael Polansky as Managing Director, Kyung-Jin Jang as Chief Scientist, Chris Hinojosa as Technical Officer and Stanley King as Commercial Development Officer for 19 employees. Approximately $23 million has been raised to date from Wing Ventures, Initialized and Hawktail, Polansky's personal investment vehicle.
