Chris Malone, who arrived from Meta in March 2025 to lead the data center strategy, is leaving OpenAI after sixteen months, in a year marked by a haemorrhage of senior executives.
Chris Malone, OpenAI's head of data centers, is leaving the company after about sixteen months. Hired in March 2025, he initially reported to President Greg Brockman, before a reorganization placed the infrastructure organization under Vice President Sachin Katti. His previous career combined nearly five years at Meta and more than a decade at Google — a typical profile of infrastructure hires conducted by AI labs.
The departure brings to more than thirteen the number of senior executives who have left OpenAI since the beginning of the year. The list includes chief revenue officer Denise Dresser, who left after eight months, chief operating officer Brad Lightcap, the company's longest-serving executive, Fidji Simo, the de facto number two in charge of product and business operations, who cited a chronic illness, ethics chief Chloe Bakalar, marketing director Kate Rouch, also for health reasons, and Bill Peebles after the Sora project was shut down.
The timing is not insignificant: OpenAI's infrastructure load has never been heavier, with the Stargate project being carried out alongside Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank and Microsoft. The supervision of data center operations is now based on Uday Ruddarraju, Brent Mayo and Spas Lazarov.
