IBM integrates OpenAI models into its consulting platform and trains tens of thousands of consultants

Announced on August 13, 2026, the agreement places GPT-5.6, Codex and ChatGPT Work at the heart of IBM Consulting Advantage, with dedicated OpenAI practice and joint marketing.

On August 13, 2026, IBM formalized a strategic partnership with OpenAI for its consulting arm. The lab's state-of-the-art models — GPT-5.6 in the lead, accompanied by Codex and ChatGPT Work — are integrated into IBM Consulting Advantage, the production platform that IBM teams use to deliver their client assignments.

The agreement is not limited to a technical connection. IBM is creating a dedicated OpenAI practice and is committed to training and certifying tens of thousands of consultants on these technologies. The two companies also plan to jointly market and build sector offerings, with a clear focus on financial services, the public sector, telecommunications and distribution.

The move is part of a busy sequence for IBM, which has also signed a multi-year contract worth $240 million with Together AI to build a large-scale inference cluster on IBM Cloud, backed by Nvidia hardware. For OpenAI, the interest is distribution: going through a historical integrator gives access to large accounts that do not buy models directly.
