OpenAI reduces GPT-5.6 Sol's developer price by more than 20%

The peak model goes from $5 to $4 per million tokens in entry and from $30 to $20 in output, for three months, under pressure from Anthropic and Chinese models.

OpenAI announced on August 21, 2026 a 20% reduction in GPT-5.6 Sol's advanced model developing price for the next three months. On a standard short context usage, the million tokens in entry now go back to $4 versus $5 before, and the million tokens come out at $20 versus $30.

The measure applies to the programming interface and to the credits associated with ChatGPT Work, the company's agent offering, and its Codex development tool. Pro, Plus and Business subscriptions are not affected and keep their rates.

The gesture comes in a context of sustained tariff competition: Anthropic made Claude Sonnet 5's introductory price permanent in early August, Google halved Gemini 3.7 Flash's price at its launch, and Chinese models with open weights continue to pull prices down. For client companies, which have become very sensitive to the cost of tokens as inference volumes increase, these revisions have become an arbitration criterion in their own right.
