Singapore: National University Opens ChatGPT, Edu and Codex to its Entire Campus

NUS is partnering with OpenAI to equip all of its students, faculty, and staff, with 94% of its students already reporting using AI multiple times a week.

The National University of Singapore and OpenAI announced on August 11, 2026 that they are deepening their collaboration. All students, faculty and staff at the institution receive access to ChatGPT Edu and Codex, with enterprise-grade security guarantees. The pedagogical roll-out will be done in stages: a pilot phase in a selection of courses before an extension to undergraduate courses, aligning the uses with the learning objectives.

The agreement also includes hackathons and design days around concrete problems, gateways to OpenAI's networks, as well as a joint research component on the development and responsible use of AI. Governance is based on the in-house AI-Know platform, which provides a framework for adoption in teaching, research and administration.

A survey of 514 students at the university sheds light on the eagerness: 94% say they use AI several times a week and 55% several times a day; 81% believe that these skills are an advantage in the global job market and 77% that they will be essential to their careers; 84% place AI literacy on the same level as writing and numeracy, and 88% want to build AI applications during their studies.
