A methodical comparison of five advanced reasoning models, tested on concrete scenarios by an open-source LLM jury rather than on the usual academic benchmarks.
This comparison by Labellerr reviews five reasoning models considered to be at the forefront of the discipline: Gemini 2.5 Pro (Google DeepMind), o3 (OpenAI), Claude 4 Opus (Anthropic), Grok 3 (xAI), and DeepSeek-R1, the only open source model of the lot.
What distinguishes each model
Gemini 2.5 Pro is distinguished by its one-million-token context window and its ability to process text, images, code, graphics and audio, with a factual self-verification function. O3 focuses on step-by-step problem solving and the use of external tools (web search, Python code execution), with answers considered particularly clear by human evaluators. Claude 4 Opus stands out for open-ended reasoning tasks and maintaining context over long conversations, with answers considered more nuanced. Grok 3 focuses on real-time news via access to X publications and a free in-depth search function ("DeepSearch"). DeepSeek-R1, the only open model in the comparison, competes on several benchmarks with much larger proprietary models, while allowing inspection and community contribution.
An original methodology
Rather than relying solely on academic benchmarks, the author designed five test scenarios representative of real uses, evaluated by a jury composed of several open-source LLMs ("LLM-as-a-Judge"), whose evaluation script is published in open access.
