Cursor launches Origin, a code hosting designed for agents

The code assistant editor opens a repository hosting service integrated with his office client, in direct competition with GitHub.

On August 17, 2026, Cursor introduced Origin, a cloud-based service for hosting code for development teams. Repositories, merge requests, reviews, merges, and continuous integration connections are gathered directly in the Cursor environment, accessible via a new tab in the desktop client as well as a dedicated command-line tool. A synchronization with GitHub is planned so as not to force a sudden migration.

The differentiating argument lies in the target: Origin is designed to be manipulated by agents as well as humans, at a time when an increasing share of contributions to a repository are being produced or reviewed automatically. It is also the company's first notable launch since the company's $60 billion takeover of SpaceX on August 14.

The product arrived in beta for paid users on August 17 and 18, in the midst of GitHub's outage — a coincidence that the developer community was greatly amused by.
