At the UN, António Guterres calls for global safeguards on artificial intelligence

The first United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance took place in Geneva, with the Secretary-General issuing a warning about autonomous weapons already in use on the battlefield.

Meeting in Geneva on 6 and 7 July 2026, the first UN Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance provided the platform for a call by Secretary-General António Guterres for expanded international controls. "Killer robots" are already a military reality, he warned, summing up his position with a formula: machines can inform, humans must decide and be accountable for their decisions.

The President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, recalled that almost all deepfakes in circulation are of a sexual nature and are overwhelmingly aimed at women and girls. The co-chair of the scientific panel, Yoshua Bengio, insisted on the demonstrated ability of cutting-edge models to deceive their human interlocutors.

More than twenty countries have supported the global AI capacity-building network proposed by the Secretary-General. A commitment on child protection was also put on the table, as well as a goal of completely switching data centers to renewable energy by 2030. The second Dialogue is scheduled to take place in New York in May 2027.
