Vultr to install a 20 MW AMD MI355X GPU supercluster in Chennai, the largest AMD Instinct deployment in India

The U.S. cloud provider is relying on Indian demand for sovereign computing. After Springfield, Ohio, Chennai became his second major AMD cluster, before moving to MI455X and Helios in 2027.

Vultr, an unlisted cloud provider, plans to deploy a 20 MW AMD Instinct MI355X GPU cluster in Chennai. The company touts it as the largest deployment of Instinct chips in India; it will be its second large AMD cluster after the one in Springfield, Ohio. The exact number of GPUs and the date of commissioning are not disclosed.

Keeping data and models in the country

Each MI355X embeds 288 GB of HBM3E memory with 8 TB/s of bandwidth. The infrastructure is aimed at AI labs, foundation model designers, start-ups, enterprises and research institutions, for high-throughput training, tuning and inference. Vultr CEO J.J. Kardwell highlights the sovereignty, data residency and latency requirements that drive Indian organizations to want local computing.

No Indian customers or business partners have yet been announced. Vultr already says it is planning a new expansion in 2027, based on MI455X GPUs and AMD's Helios rack architecture.
