Updated on October 24, the list lists the abandonments of 2026: Sora, Atlas, Relay, Huxe, Yupp, Notion Mail, the bankruptcy of Character.AI, and recalls that about 42% of IA projects are abandoned.
TechCrunch maintains an evolving list of AI projects that have closed, been absorbed or clearly disappointed. His last update, dated October 24th and signed Lauren Forristal, is based on a figure: about 42% of AI initiatives end up abandoned by the company that carries them. The media presents this census less as a record of failures than as a pool of lessons for the sector.
One year 2026
On the OpenAI side, Sora's social video application closed in March, with its operating costs and an audience that was not left behind; the ChatGPT Atlas browser was stopped in August after less than a year, its functions returned in ChatGPT as those of Agent Operator; and the July super-app redesign, which merged Chat, Codex and Work, was removed after criticism on an interface deemed confused. Relay, an alternative to five-year-old Zapier, closed in August, caught up with integrated automation directly at OpenAI and Google. Huxe, an audio application founded by former NotebookLM developers, stopped in May, and Yupp, a comparison of more than 800 models earning cryptocurrency votes in March. Notion Mail was to close on September 22.
The list adds Character.AI, placed in bankruptcy in October after family lawsuits and a disclaimer from Disney, who proposed $20 million in proceedings. It also goes back to the delays of Apple's new Siri, resulting in a $250 million deal, Microsoft's Recall, and Humane's AI Pin and Rabbit R1.
