Personal Intelligence: Google specifies that data shared from Gmail or Photos can be used to target advertising

Google's new privacy policy opens an exception: what the user voluntarily connects to certain services to customize Gemini or Search can also customize ads.

With Personal Intelligence, Gemini and Google search can tap into the user's connected apps — Gmail, Drive, Google Photos — to give less generic answers, for example suggest restaurants near a booked hotel whose confirmation sleeps in the mailbox. Google has just updated its privacy policy to clarify the reverse of this promise.

An exception to the principle of "no advertising from Gmail"

The text maintains that Gmail, Drive and Photos content is not used by default to customize the advertisement. But it adds an exception for users who explicitly choose to connect this data to Google services offering personalized advertising: in this case, shared information can also influence displayed ads. Google ensures that it does not pass on to advertisers identifying information, such as the name or e-mail address, without agreement.

It is possible to disconnect applications or disable custom recommendations, but Android Authority stresses that data already stored in search service history may remain, even after deletion of the original email or photo.
