This performance belies the recurring skepticism surrounding the ability of cutting-edge AI laboratories to become profitable in the face of exploding computing costs. The company is now targeting a first quarter of $1 billion in operating income as early as the third quarter of 2026, while still carrying a cumulative deficit estimated at between $10 billion and $15 billion since its creation in 2021.
