Rivian buys Third Dimension AI to simulate in 3D the driving scenes missing from its autonomous vehicles

The young shoot, founded in 2024, turns real data into controllable 3D environments. Rivian wants to generate the rare cases that his driving aid and future robotaxis need.

Rivian announced on October 22 the acquisition of Third Dimension AI, a start-up created in 2024 by Tolga Kart (CEO) and Piotr Sokolski. Its platform reconstructs environments from real-world data and turns them into high-fidelity 3D scenes that can be modified at will: adding variants, causing edge situations, producing training and validation data in large quantities. The amount of the operation has not been disclosed.

No longer waiting for rare cases

The interest for the manufacturer is to no longer depend on exceptional situations encountered on the road to train its models: it will be able to recreate and vary difficult scenarios in simulation, then measure how its system reacts to them. Third Dimension's managers and engineers join Rivian's research and autonomy engineering teams.

James Philbin, senior vice president of autonomy and AI, touts simulation as a pillar of the company's autonomous driving training and validation, both for its consumer vehicles and its robotaxi project. The acquisition is part of a series of recent moves by Rivian on autonomy, following the announcement of its own 5nm chip.
