Anthropic entrusts the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation, after doing so for MCP

Adopted by over 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, the "skills" format is under the governance of the Linux Foundation-hosted foundation.

Anthropic transfers Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), the structure it co-founded last year with Block and OpenAI under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, which already manages the Model Context Protocol. A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file and, if necessary, scripts or reference documents that teach an agent a specific task or domain. The concept was born from work on Claude Code, who lacked the procedural know-how of business tasks.

One million published skills

Launched in October 2025 and published as a standard open in December, the format has been integrated by over 70 platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. Anthropic claims a million published skills and nearly 280 million facilities.

The foundation recovers the name, logo, GitHub organization and agentskills.io domain. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will provide individual maintenance, led by David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag. The proposed roadmap includes numbered versions, a formal proposal process and safety recommendations for those who write or install skills; There is no need to join the AAIF to use or contribute to the standard.
