The UN’s target for 100 per cent renewable AI data centres is coming up against reality

Whilst the UN Secretary-General is calling for all data centres to be powered by renewable energy by 2030, investment in gas and coal is on the rise again.

Guterres has called on all data centers to run on renewable energy by 2030 and for more transparency on their energy, water and land impact. But according to most industry analysts, this goal would require transformations of the electricity system far faster than anything currently planned.

In fact, the growth in electricity demand from AI data centers is on the contrary reviving investment in fossil fuels: projects to add non-renewable capacity jumped by 71% between 2025 and 2026, while renewable growth peaked at 2% over the same period. The International Energy Agency even notes that US spending on coal and gas production is expected to exceed that of China for the first time in decades, driven by the need for baseload power capable of supplementing intermittent renewables.
