With Claude Code, thousands of users are ‘turning off’ adverts and tracking on their smart TVs

Projects such as dumbtv and cleanyourtv show that a code agent can now ‘clean up’ a Wi-Fi-connected television: adverts, tracking and unnecessary software are removed.

A new and unexpected use for programming tools: making your smart TV… less smart. Several developers and ‘vibe coding’ enthusiasts are sharing tips on how to remove sponsored adverts, speed up the app launcher, redesign the home screen and disable tracking features. The ‘dumbtv’ project aims to create a TV limited to its owner’s apps and HDMI inputs, with no adverts or forced updates; ‘cleanyourtv’ promises to rid any Android TV or Google TV of its pre-installed software via Wi-Fi and install a launcher inspired by Apple TV.

Its creator explains that he provided Claude Code with the model number of his parents’ television: the agent located it on the network, removed 25 Xiaomi packages and wrote a new home screen. Following the publication of his guide on GitHub, several thousand people replicated the process within two days on Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Fire TV and LG devices. The method does not require root access and can be reversed by restoring the device to its factory settings.

A threat to the TV advertising model

Recent televisions feature automatic content recognition (ACR), which identifies what is being watched in order to sell this data or target adverts. If these hacks become widespread, they could undermine this market. However, results remain mixed: some users report that the agent refuses requests that are too vague, essential packages being deleted by mistake, or even a television being rendered unusable.
