Cybersecurity jobs: vacancies fall by 26 per cent in the US, but demand for AI security engineers soars by 268 per cent

According to CyberSN, cybersecurity job vacancies have fallen to their lowest level in four years. Only a few roles related to AI and data have bucked the trend, with demand for them soaring.

CyberSN's report on the US cybersecurity job market paints a mixed picture. Between January and September 2026, 235,786 job offers were recorded, compared to 320,210 over the same period in 2025: a decline of 26.4% that brings the market to its lowest level in four years. The data comes from JobSpikr, deduplicated and then classified according to a taxonomy of 45 functions divided into ten families, to judge the skills actually in demand rather than job titles.

AI, the only pocket of growth

Two professions are doing well: the demand for AI security engineers increased by 268.3% over one year, and that of data scientists specialising in cyber by 203.5%. Just under 15% of the ads mention AI, a share that was stable over one year but accelerated at the end of the period, with a peak of 20% in September. Research (32.7% of offers) and offensive (23.3%) are the ones that require the most AI skills.

The sharpest declines were for insider threat analysts (−55.6%), cyber risk analysts (−51.5%), penetration testers (−45.9%) and CISO positions (−38.9%), the latter of which was partly explained by an exceptionally strong 2025.
