Dario Amodei: AI enters its "adolescence" and will test humanity

In an essay of 20,000 words, Anthropic's patron warns that humanity is about to hold almost unimaginable power, and that it must be prepared collectively.

Published at the end of January, Dario Amodei's essay "The Adolescence of Technology" describes current AI as going through a phase of technological adolescence: already powerful, still unstable, and about to "test who we are as a species". In it, the head of Anthropic claims that humanity is on the verge of being entrusted with almost unimaginable power, and that no actor – neither laboratories nor governments – is fully prepared for the consequences of this transition today.

Amodei extends themes already addressed in his previous text "Machines of Loving Grace", where he described a future general AI as a "nation of geniuses in a data center". His January essay insists less on the potential benefits than on the urgency of building, now, the institutional and technical safeguards capable of framing a technology whose power trajectory exceeds that of the governance that should accompany it.
